Adopt-A-Beach System Implementation

The Alliance engaged Windsor in early 2011 to redevelop the AAB program’s web presence, making it simple for the public to find and register for beach cleanup events as well as record cleanup results. Windsor conducted a detailed requirements and design effort at the Alliance’s Chicago office, resulting in a system prototype that provided the Alliance with a detailed model of the system. Windsor developed and tested the new AAB system and released it to the public in July 2011. The system is hosted at http://www.adoptabeach.org.

The AAB system uses Google maps to display the locations of beaches and events. Once users are registered, they may create new cleanup events and make them publicly available for others who may register to participate. The Alliance then sends the organizer supplies and instructions for the event. Automatic emails notify registrants whenever event information changes or an event is canceled.

Once an event is complete, the AAB system supports the entry of litter collected from the event, allowing the Alliance to track the effectiveness of cleanup events. Cleanup participants also perform a survey of beach conditions modeled closely after the EPA Great Lakes Routine Sanitary Survey form. Survey data is also tracked within the AAB System. The public can query and download all litter and survey data from the public site.

The release of the new system marks an important milestone for the Alliance, now centrally storing all the cleanup data in one system and automating event creation and registration processes which were previously intensely manual. Finally, the system achieves the goal of making it easy and fun for the public to learn about the program and participate in a cleanup event. In the first month of operation, the AAB system received hundreds of registrations of groups totaling over 3,500 volunteers for upcoming cleanup events.
