Drinking Water Contamination Map Application
The Hawaii State Department of Health (DOH) Safe Drinking Water Branch (SDWB) manages the state's non-regulatory Groundwater Protection Program (GWPP). The Hawaii GWPP's goal is to protect human health and sensitive ecosystems by protecting groundwater resources. The program's focus is on water quality assessment, and on developing pollution prevention and protection measures.
The GWPP has issued Groundwater Contamination Maps for the state since 1989. These maps are based on monitoring data for public drinking water wells and identify locations where groundwater contaminants have been detected and confirmed. Currently, the Groundwater Contamination Maps are manually developed and published to the branch's Web site.
SDWB and Windsor Solutions (Windsor) partnered to design, develop and implement a new application that allows external stakeholders to view annual groundwater maps and contamination data, and provides the branch with a tool to administer/prepare the annual data sets used to populate the maps. This system was launched in March 2014. More information about the application can be found on the SDWB Web site.
