LAKE OSWEGO, OR — The New York Department of Environmental Conservation’s Nature Explorer application was presented at the 2009 Northwest GIS User Group conference in Sunriver, Oregon on October 15th. The conference is a forum for users of ESRI’s ArcGIS software to present and share information and to learn about upcoming releases and product enhancements. Chris Beaudette, a GIS Analyst/Developer at Windsor Solutions, presented the application as part of the conference’s “Natural Resources, Environmental Science & Conservation” track. The presentation, “Using the JavaScript API to Support Biodiversity and At-Risk Species,” (ppt) highlighted how Windsor used the latest GIS toolsets from ESRI to create an application using fast, dynamic Web maps to aid in querying and presenting biodiversity data. The presentation included specifics about how Windsor customized the API for use by the Nature Explorer application, how the application integrated spatial and tabular data and other Web technologies, and some general information about how the application is furthering the use of data exchanged on the EPA’s Exchange Network.

Feel free to download the Nature Explorer presentation (ppt) given at the Conference. The application itself can be viewed on the NY DEC Web site. Additional information about the NW GIS User Conference is available on the conference Web site.
